We had lots of things happening this week in our class, city, county, state, and country. Today, we had our first spelling test! I am happy to say that the students made it through the experience. They brought home another list tonight.
Thank you for sending in your conference time sheets. That is going to help me a lot with scheduling tonight. The students made a thankfulness tree this week. It is displayed proudly on the inside of our classroom door, so you will be able to see it at conferences. It turned out really nice. Each of the students wrote down something that they are thankful for. There is going to be a Newspaper Club beginning on this coming Monday, November 14th. Please send a note in with your child giving permission for them to stay after school and take home the second bus which arrives at the school at 3:45. Important Dates and Upcoming Events:

From Ms. Roberts:
November is here! Grading day has also arrived. I have been passing out missing work to the students for the last two weeks in hopes that they will turn it in. As these papers were in-class work and not homework, the students have had a few reminders on checking their lockers, desks, and backpacks to see if they misplaced the papers somewhere. I had work times this week when the students had a chance to redo their work, and turn it in to me for a slightly lesser credit. I am very pleased that a lot of the work was turned in. Our spelling words were passed out last week, and there is a new sheet heading home today to reinforce those spelling words. The test for these words is next Thursday, so if you could practice the words with your student, that would be great. Remember that if you want to volunteer in the class or on a field trip, that you need a background check. The paperwork is available in the office. Important Dates and Upcoming Events:

Student Spotlight Congratulations Elijha and Delaney on getting all of your schoolwork and homework in on time! Grading is just around the corner. I can’t believe how this first term of school flew by! The students were disappointed that their field trip was cancelled this month, but were surprised just today when the ballet came and visited us! Pulcinella by the Eugene Ballet was performed in our gym just after noon. It was great being able to experience that!
The Halloween Social is this evening, and the kids are really looking forward to it. I hope that a fun time is had by all. I am sending out something new today. We are beginning a study in spelling reinforcement. The students are bringing home a worksheet that they need to turn in on Monday. They will study these words and be tested on them in two weeks. Remember that if you want to volunteer in the class or on a field trip, that you need a background check. The paperwork is available in the office. Important Dates and Upcoming Events:

We have a new self-manager to add to our list this week. Congratulations Trinite’ Perales! Fall is definitely here, and so is the rainy weather that is typical for our Oregon Autumn. Can you believe that October is more than halfway over with already!? I certainly can’t.
The students have begun studying different forms of grammar and punctuation to help them with their writing. In the next week they can expect to add spelling and vocabulary to their list. It’s going to be a short list, but one that will hopefully challenge them, and increase their comprehension. Remember that if you want to volunteer in the class or on a field trip, that you need a background check. The paperwork is available in the office. Important Dates and Upcoming Events:

The student of the month nominations are in and will be determined soon! I know there were quite a few responsible students this month! The 2nd week of October is complete. Field trips have been planned, the last volleyball game at home has occurred, school pictures were taken, and we are beginning the self-manager program at school. Boy, the students have had a busy week!
I can’t wait for you to see the paintings that the students have been doing this week! They are amazing! The students have been earning their classroom bucks for good behaviors, good deeds, and jobs well done in the classroom. This week, we had a surprise drawing, where the behavior bucks were put into a jar and one was drawn for a free Scholastic book worth up to $5! It was so amazing, and the students are really enjoying these drawings. The drawings will be done on a surprise day approximately every two weeks. Remember that if you want to volunteer in the class or on a field trip, that you need a background check. The paperwork is available in the office.

Student Spotlight We have our first classroom self-managers! Congratulations Alexis and Delaney! From what I hear there are a few more soon to be announced too! Wow! I can’t believe that one month has gone by. The class has been having a lot of fun summarizing stories, retelling them in their own words, and painting pictures to depict what they thought a poem portrayed to them personally. It has been interesting.
The students have been introduced to a new program this year called “self managers”. They have to maintain 3 points for behavior in all their classes, and be determined by their reading, math, and homeroom teachers to be a self manager. After they have applied, if they are chosen by the Principal, they get privileges such as leaving the classroom early for transitions, the self manager hall pass, and classroom benefits. It’s really awesome and we are all super excited about when our class will get their first self managers.

Fantastic job on the attendance this week. I hope everyone stays well, and we have another week with great attendance. J From Ms. Roberts:
It’s been a fun week in our classroom! We had our first experience with a substitute in the classroom due to a meeting that I needed to attend. The class did pretty well as a whole, and I was very proud of them. The students have been enjoying moments where their classmates bring in things for show and tell. I allow 2 students a day to share, and since it is getting to be so popular, I am thinking of making a schedule so that you can know when to expect that your student is participating. Everyone was very excited when we got to use the computers yesterday. Every student has their own computer that no one else uses, and they are very proud of that fact. So far, we have begun classes in my Google Classroom in writing and Social Studies. It will be fun to see how well they do! Important Dates andUpcoming Events:
Student Spotlight It’s been another marvelous week in attendance. Keep up the great work! From Ms. Roberts:
This has been a super busy week! Our class earned its first congratulations from the Principal, being entered into a drawing for a free recess! I am very proud of how the class has been doing as a whole. This week in Science, the students have been extending their learning about the human body, figuring out that the smallest part of us is an atom. Social Studies has integrated voting and a system of economy into our classroom this week. The students are rather excited about that. In writing, the class is delving into the interpretation of two poems, seeing how the poems relate to each other. After writing their first draft, the students will be extending their interpretation to a piece of art. It’s great seeing how different their opinions are! Important Dates and Upcoming Events:

Fantastic job on attendance this week! We have had perfect attendance twice! Congrats Kiersten and Delaney on having your artwork chosen for the classroom bucks! J Another week gone by already,
If you are like me, the time is whizzing by. When I think about how quickly the month is going, it makes my mind whir on how soon the time to grade will arrive! The students have been doing much better this week after familiarizing themselves of school policies. The summer drowsiness has begun to dissipate and we are all getting back into the swing of things. SFA, the reading program, began this Monday, and all students are deep into their Eureka/Engage NY math, some of which bringing home homework. When the students are in my class, they do not always have homework as I give them some time to work on what they do not have finished in class. Science also began this week, and we are having a great time familiarizing ourselves with how to diagnose issues with the human body!
Wow! We made it!
We had a great first week of 6th grade! The class was great as we learned all the rules for the classroom and school. We did a few art projects in the classroom and began delving into our math, science, and social studies projects. All the kids have been beginning their day with creative writing. It’s been great seeing how well they can put what they see in their imagination on paper! We have also been filling out applications for the classroom jobs. The class will be deciding on a name and designing a classroom “buck”, or dollar, that the students will earn through their good behavior in the classroom. It will be great to see what they come up with.
